Visitor numbers in national parks across the country have seen big jumps over the past decade. As a result, many parks have taken measures to control crowding and alleviate traffic backups in the park.
In Zion National Park, the shuttle system has been helping to reduce traffic and protect the park for more than two decades. But more recently, many national parks have begun to implement reservation systems. These are great for cutting back on overcrowding in the park. However, they can make visiting a national park more difficult, especially during busy times of year.
If you’re planning a visit to Watchman Villas in 2024, keep reading. We’re answering the question of whether or not you’ll need a reservation to visit Zion in 2024, and some other reservations you’ll need during your stay in our Zion National Park rentals.
Do You Need a Reservation to Visit Zion in 2024?
Several popular national parks will require a reservation to visit in 2024. But despite being the third most popular national park in the country, Zion isn’t one of them.
Zion National Park will not require a reservation to visit in 2024. This means that you can plan a last-minute stay at luxury resorts near Zion National Park or a visit during the busiest time of year without having to worry about not being able to get in.
Reservations You Will Need While Visiting Zion National Park
You don’t need a reservation to visit Zion National Park in 2024. But there are a few other reservations that you might need to make during your stay in our Zion National Park rentals.
Angels Landing Permits
This reservation is one that not all guests will need or want. But it can be difficult to get, especially during the busiest times of the year.
In response to rising numbers of hikers looking to take on Angels Landing in 2020 and 2021, the National Park Service decided to launch the Angels Landing Pilot Permit Program. Starting in January 2022, anyone wanting to hike Angels Landing past Scout Lookout will need to present a permit.
Getting a Permit
Permits can be obtained in one of two lotteries. The first is the Seasonal Lottery. Open four times a year, this lottery allots permits for the following season. In 2024, the Seasonal Lottery dates will be as follows:
- For hikes between March 1 and May 31, the Seasonal Lottery will be open between January 1 and January 20. Permits will be issued on January 25.
- Permits for hikes between June 1 and August 31, the Seasonal Lottery will be open from April 1 to April 20. Permits will be issued on April 25.
- For hikes between September 1 and November 30, the Seasonal Lottery will be open from July 1 to July 20. Permits will be issued on July 25.
- Permits for hikes between December 1 and February 28, 2025, the Seasonal Lottery will be open from October 1 to October 20. Permits will be issued on October 25.
If you don’t get a permit in the Seasonal Lottery, or if you’re planning a last minute visit, you can also enter the Day-Before Lottery. This lottery opens daily at 12:01 a.m. MT, and is open until 3 p.m. MT. Permits are issued at 4 p.m.
For both lotteries, entering will cost $6. If you receive a permit, you’ll pay an additional $3 per person registered.
Hiking in Utah is one of the best ways to take in the state’s incredible landscapes. And Angels Landing is one of the state, or perhaps even the country’s, most popular and incredible trails. If you want to increase your chances of getting a permit during your stay in our Zion National Park rentals, make sure to enter the Seasonal Lottery for the dates of your stay.
Another reservation that you might need during your spa getaway in Utah is Wilderness Permit. These permits are required if you plan to go canyoneering or hike the full, top-down route of The Narrows on a day hike.
Like the Angels Landing permit, there is a Seasonal Lottery for Wilderness Permits, as well as a Daily Lottery. You can also visit the Wilderness Desk, located at both the Zion Canyon Visitor Center and the Kolob Canyons Visitor Center, to try for a Wilderness Permit on the day of your visit. These are available on a first-come, first served basis.
It costs $6 to apply for a Wilderness Permit, whether you do it day-of or in advance. If you receive a permit, you’ll pay an additional $10 per person for your permit.
