Summer has finally arrived in Southern Utah, bringing with it long days, hot weather, and plenty of families looking to make incredible memories together. If you’re like many families, you take advantage of the summer break from school to enjoy a vacation. Many families choose national parks like Zion for their vacation destination because they offer incredible natural beauty, fun outdoor activities, a chance to add in some learning and education, and the perfect backdrop to creating memories you’ll cherish for a lifetime.

But if you’re thinking about spending your next vacation at Zion, there are a few things you should know to make the most of your summer visit. From choosing the right Zion resort to planning your activities, keep reading to learn our top tips for planning your stay at Watchman Villas this time of year.

1. Start With the Right Zion Resort

Planning a fun, family-friendly trip to Zion National Park starts with choosing the right lodging. Choosing the right Zion resort can have an impact on every part of your trip. The right resort will give your family room to relax at the end of a long day, a chance to rest before powering through some challenging hikes, and a spot to unwind if you choose to spend a day at the resort and take a break from exploring.

From families with young children to extended families traveling together, Watchman Villas is the perfect choice for families of all ages and sizes. Our spacious private villas are available with one or two bedrooms, providing plenty of space for your family to relax and unwind after a long day. With large living rooms, dining rooms, and fully-equipped kitchens, there’s also plenty of room for your family to spend quality time together and even enjoy a home-cooked meal. Several of the units even feature spacious outdoor living spaces where you can dine, soak in the hot tub, or just take in the views while discussing your plans for the next day.

2. Take Advantage of the Springdale and Zion Canyon Shuttle Systems

Nothing can ruin a day faster than spending an hour or more looking for a place to park first thing in the morning. On busy days in Zion National Park, it’s not unusual for parking to fill up in the park a short time after it opens. When this happens, visitors will need to find parking elsewhere in Springdale. While there are some spaces throughout town, they can be difficult to find. They may also fill quickly on busy days.

Spending an hour in the car first thing in the morning circling the town looking for parking is almost certain to lead to some frayed nerves. To make sure your family-friendly day in Zion starts off on the right foot, take advantage of the Zion Canyon Shuttle system to get to the park with your family each day.

When you stay at Watchman Villas, you’ll be just a short walk from several stops on the Springdale Shuttle line. The closest is Shuttle Stop #6. This means that you can hop on the shuttle and ride directly to the entrance to the park to start your day. From there, hop on the Zion Canyon Shuttle and ride directly to your choice of trailheads. If you’re traveling with young kids, having the ability to get to the park more quickly each day can help you pack more into your trip.

If you don’t mind a short walk, you can also skip the Springdale Shuttle and the parking hassles and walk to the entrance to the park.

3. Choose Trails and Activities in Advance

Zion National Park is home to some of the most challenging hiking trails in the country. But while Angels Landing and The Narrows might be a couple of the park’s most famous trails, they are far from your only option and not a great choice for a family-friendly day in Zion.

There are plenty of other kid-friendly trails to enjoy in the park. Weeping Rock is one great option. This short trail is just a half-mile long and follows the Virgin River to a rock overhang. Kids will love splashing around in the water, while adults will love the shade and taking a break from the bright sun on a hot day. Older kids will also enjoy Emerald Pools. This trail has three sections, so you can customize your experience.
